Draught excluder necktie snake

It is getting really cold in Melbourne right now. Heat escapes our lounge room from the gap under our door. What better excuse than to make a door draught stopper, out of things from around the house. Using men's neckties from my fabric stash, opened up, ironed flat, and stitched together in a tube, I made a snake! Filled entirely with fabric scraps, buttons for eyes, and a washing sponge for its tongue.

Whilst draught excluder snake should sit usefully under the door, my little boy likes playing with it just as much, so Mr Recycled Snake has two uses :)

Tie romper suit

A quick gift for a friends newborn boy. Long sleeve romper suit, bought in Savers but still new with the tag on $5! Tie, op-shop. This tie would be terrible worn on a man, but on this little romper suit, it looks cute! I cut the thin bit off the tie, a little knot, and machine stitched onto the romper.

Mini tie T's for kids

Out of some of the thrifted mens necktie fabric I've had leftover from my necktie owl project, I made a mini tie to sew onto one of my son's plain white hand-me-down t-shirts. I liked the way it turned out, so I decided to make more as Christmas gifts for friends kids this year.

I feel terribly guilty about this, but I did in fact buy two new blank t-shirts. I would prefer to source everything second hand, and these t-shirts were the first 'new' clothing items I've bought in well over a year. I'm just not sure I could give second hand clothing as gifts for friends kids? The mens necktie fabric is of course second hand.

Necktie Owls

These little critters are hand stitched. They are little owl brooches made from mens neckties. There is always an abundance of mens neckties in op shops, some of which have beautiful fabric, so what better way to use upcycle them into cute little necktie owls!


Necktie owls are versatile little creatures, as well as brooches, they can also be pinned to bags, sewn onto baby blankets, gift cards, etc.
